Terry Maul
Head Coach

Coach Terry Maul directs all phases of the ATAC program and is the on-deck coach for the ATAC senior program. Coach Maul has over 40 years coaching experience which include the following accomplishments:

American Swim coaches Association level 5 certification (the highest level)for both USS club and NCAA.

Voted the Florida Association Senior coach of the year in 2003

Head coach USA National Junior Team in Montreal, Canada in 1992.

Head coach of USA National team in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in 1984.

Served as head coach of swimming at Florida State University for 18 years (1975 - 1993)

Coach Maul has developed numerous Olympic Trial qualifiers, Senior National finalists, and Junior National champions as well as several USS age group champions.

In addition to his duties with ATAC, Coach Maul is also working as an assistant professor of statistics and sociology at Thomas University in Thomasville, GA. Coach Maul is married to Dr. Jodi Yambor-Maul and has two children, John (8) and Alyssa (13).

Gerry Norris
Director of Program Development

Gerry has coached and worked in Sports Management and Administration for 39 years. He has facilitated the growth and expansion of Sports and Recreation in Tallahassee/Leon County through the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department, which was recognized as the NUMBER ONE Recreation Department in the country in 2004 (National Recreation and Parks Association “Gold Medal Award”).

He has served on state and national Boards of Directors for various competitive sports, as well as having presented Sports and Customer Service seminars and clinics at professional conferences and retreats.

1969 – 1974…..Head Coach of the Tallahassee Swim Team (TST)

1974 – 1984…..City of Tallahassee Aquatic Supervisor and A/G coach for ATAC (formally TST)

1984 – 2006…...City of Tallahassee Athletic Superintendent

Swimming is a family affair. Gerry is married to Karen (Synchronized swimming coach for 30 years and current Southern Zone Rep. for US Synchro) and has three children; Katie, 26 (2005 Collegiate and US National Solo Champion – Synchro), Karla, 23 ( 13 year ATAC swimmer and current FSU Water Polo President), and Christopher, 16 (current ATAC and Chiles High School swimmer).

Shantel Commander
Age Group/Masters/High School Conditioning Coach

Shantel began her swimming at the age of 8 in Augusta, GA. By the time she reached high school she was swimming year-round for the Nashville Aquatic Club in Tennessee. She qualified for U.S. Nationals in the 200 and 100 Breaststroke as well as the 400 IM. Shantel attended The University of Kentucky on scholarship where she received her degree in Public Relations in 2006. While at Kentucky she qualified for the 2004 Olympic Trials and placed as high as 14th at NCAA's in the 200 Breast earning her a spot on a few top 10 lists for the Wildcats. Over the past year she has coached Masters and has become increasingly interested in the coaching side of swimming, which is what brings her here to ATAC today. "I want to learn from the best". She now coaches full time with the High School Conditioning group, Masters, and Age Group Pressure I. You can also find Shantel in the office where she is assisting Frances on the administrative side of things.

Amanda Meyer
Novice Group Coach

I began swimming when I was 13 years old and immediately fell in love with the sport. I swam competitively for a private club in Hallandale Fl., called the King Tut Swim Team. With this team, I competed in swim meets as well as Open Water swims. I swam for my High School for four years and was Team Captain my Senior year. I worked for several years as a volunteer coach for the South Broward Bulldog’s Novice team in Hollywood Fl. Then I worked for one summer as a beginning level swim instructor with Aventura Aquatic Club. After I graduated for high school I moved to Tallahassee, where I am currently majoring in Psychology at FSU, and I have been working as a novice coach with ATAC since this April 2007.

Malcom Hosford
Novice and Assistant Age Group Coach

Malcom started swimming at the age of 5 at the Tallahassee YMCA under his father Dick Hosford. He joined ATAC at the age of 8 years old and swam for LEON HIGH '96-'99. He was freshman of the year for Leon in '96. State Champion in '97 in the 200 medley relay. Made the ALL-STAR team for the state of Florida in '97 and '98. State Champion in '98 in the 100 free, 50 free, and 200 medley relay. He was voted the High School Swimmer of the year in 1998 and 1999. State Champion in '99 in the 200 medley and 50 free. Both of which made ALL-AMERICAN honors.

Malcom was voted swimmer of the year by USS swimming and by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association and SPEEDO in 1999. He was a Jr. National Champion in 200 I.M. and 50 free. Both of which broke the national records and Olympic Trials qualifications.

He signed with AUBURN UNIVERSITY in '99 and was voted Freshman of the year at AUBURN in 2000. He was SEC champion in 200 free and 800 free relay and 2nd in the 200 IM. Both made All-American Honors. He was part of the 2000 SEC Champion Team and made All SEC team for the 200 free. Malcom was part of Auburn's 2ND PLACE TEAM at NCAA's in 2000. He swam 200 IM, 50 free, and 100 breast at the 2000 Olympic trial. He was part of ATAC's first Sr. Champion Winning team in '03.

Malcom was the Capital City Aquatic Club assistant from '00-'05 and head coach from '06-'07. He has taught swimming lessons for the past eleven years and started coaching with ATAC the summer of 2007.

Alyssa Yarbrough
Novice and Age Group II Coach

Alyssa Yarborough comes from the Panama City Swim Team where she has been working with the Novice and Age Group swimmers. As many of you may know, the Panama City Swim Team is coached by Jonathan Kaplan and Sarah Mrazek, both ATAC alumni, so having Alyssa join the ATAC ranks “keeps it all in the family”. Alyssa is currently enrolled at FSU and will helping with both the Novice and Age Group Pressure II programs.

While at FSU, Alyssa will be finishing up her Bachelors Degree in Political Science. Alyssa got started in aquatics in Panama City as a certified Water Safety Instructor, teaching swim lessons for two years at Gulf Coast Community College. In 2006 she joined the Panama City Swim Team as the Head Novice Coach. She also assisted with the Age Group program during this time. She is an American Swimming Coaches Assoc. certified Level I coach and is currently finishing up her Level II certification requirements.

Grant Nelson
Assistant Coach

Grant Nelson grew up in Tampa, Florida where he competed for Carrollwood Village Swim Team for ten years. He competed in various meets from JO’s to Zones for a number of years. From 2001 until 2008 Grant served as an athlete-representative for USA Swimming. He attended annual conventions for USA Swimming as well as Florida Swimming meetings. He has served on both the Rules and Regulations Committee and the Safety Education Committee for USA Swimming.

Grant attended the University of Kentucky on a swimming scholarship where he competed for four years and received his degree in Accounting. He competed in the Spring and Summer Nationals in the 200fly and 400 free from 2005-2007. He served as Captain of the Men’s Team his junior and Senior Year and is currently ranked in the Top 10 in several events for UK . Grant is currently attending Florida State University for his Master’s in Accounting and is preparing to take the CPA exam this coming year.

Karla Norris
Coach for the ATAC Bainbridge / Thomasville programs

Karla is a recent graduate of Florida State University (2008) with a degree in Exercise Science. She was an ATAC Junior Olympic and Senior Championship swimmer for 13 years and a member of the 2003 ATAC Florida Senior State Championship team. She also swam for Lincoln High for four years and was Team Captain as well as MVP in 2000 and 2002. During her collegiate years she became the Head Coach of the Lincoln High School Swim Team from 2003 to 2007 and President/Captain of the FSU Water Polo Club. She also took on the position of the Head Coach of the Bainbridge Extreme Swim Team (BEST) in the summer of 2008. While participating on the FSU Water Polo Club she was awarded the Collegiate Water Polo Association All Conference Athlete from 2005-2008, as well as being selected as the FSU Water Polo Most Improved in 2004 and MVP in 2007 and 2008.

Karla’s responsibilities include coordinating and coaching the combined Bainbridge and Thomasville ATAC satellite programs with the goal of growing these two programs for the future. She will be preparing these swimmers for both the Georgia Parks League competitions and ATAC U.S.S competition.
