ATAC Swimmers Excel at Cross Country Meet

September 19, 2008

It’s that time of year again – time for ATAC swimmers to show Tallahassee and Leon County that they are not just masters of the aquatic environment but that they also dominate on land!

On September 19, several members of ATAC raced in the second of 4 Leon County middle school cross country races – this one at Tom Brown Park.

Cece Williams covered the 2-mile course for Deerlake Middle School in 12:05 for first and a new course record. Finishing a strong 3rd overall, also from Deerlake, was Lia Lombardi (13:35). Sydney Simpson from Swift Creek scored a Top 20 finish (18th) in 15:46. A total of 139 runners competed in the girls race.

On the boys side, ATAC’s Scott Fortier, running for Swift Creek, blazed his way to a 3rd-place finish in 12:22. Colin Abbey from Raa Middle School grabbed a Top 10 finish (9th) in 12:47. Marshall Hendlin , Anthony Stephens, and Christopher Holmes all competed for Deerlake and helped their team to a 4th-place finish. A total of 200 boys competed in the race.

Looks like Coach Terry’s running program is paying off big time! Way to go, ATAC!

ATAC Dominates at Red Hills Kids Triathlon

May 18, 2008

ATAC swimmers proved again this year that they are some of the fittest athletes around by dominating the Red Hills Kids Triathlon May 18 at Maclay Garden State Park. A total of 39 ATAC swimmers (out of a total of 152 entrants) completed the race which consisted of a 125-yard swim, 3-mile bike, and 1-mile run.

ATAC swimmers took 11 of the top 20 overall, led by Brian Bowden in a blazing 13:38, which would have been a new course record but for the presence this year of a 14-year-old National Triathlon Team member. Brian placed 2nd overall, followed close behind by Scott Fortier in 13:49, good for 4th place overall.

Leading the way for the girls was new ATAC team member Kristin Sweeney, 6th overall in 14:19, a new course record for girls by over 40 seconds! Right behind was Cece Williams, 7th overall in 14:31. ATAC swimmers rounding out the Top 20 were Nathan Hudson, 8th overall (15:34); Lia Lombardi, 9th overall (15:36); new ATAC swimmer Emily Kennedy, 10th overall (15:42); Anthony Stephens, 15th overall (16:29); Allison Bowden, 16th overall (16:48); 8-year-old Daniel Sweeney, 17th overall (16:53); and Matthew Sweeney, 18th overall (16:57).

Age group winners from ATAC included Stephanie Holmes, 7-year-old girls; Daniel Sweeney, 8-year-old boys; Mathew Sweeney, 11-year-old boys; Anthony Stephens, 12-year-old boys; Cece Williams, 12-year-old girls; Kristin Sweeney, 13-year-old girls; Scott Fortier, 13-year-old boys; and Emily Kennedy, 15-year-old girls.

Colin Abbey

Colin Abbey at Red Hills

April 5, 2008

ATAC was very well represented at the 2008 Red Hills Triathlon by 13-year old Colin Abbey (Age Group Pressure 1). Colin signed up as the youngest competitor (in race history) to tackle Florida’s toughest “sprint” triathlon (500-yard swim, 16 mile bike, and a 5K run). Colin showed some nerves prior to the race which were quickly swept away as he hit the first wave of the swim. Colin showed that the hard work in the pool can pay off in other arenas as positioned himself in the open water near the front of 75 other males (aged 29 and under) to exit the water in 4th place to the cheers of the crowd. Not having the strength of the other competitors (after all he is 13 !!!!!), Colin was passed on the bike by many of the top finishers who took time as they passed him to congratulate him on his “great’ swim. Colin finished the 16-mile bike in approximately 1-hour and the 5K run in 27-minutes for a very respectable overall time 1 hour 38 minutes 6 seconds (1:38.06). Several spectators were heard saying “Did you see that young kid”, usually to the response of “He swims for ATAC”.

Several other faces from the pool deck were seen at the race, including Brian Ayers (Morgan and Makayla’s Dad) who hobbled in on bad knee at 1:39.00 and first timer Susan Stephens (Thomas and Anthony’s mom) who achieved her goal in finishing under two hours in 1:58.36.

Congrats ATAC... young and not so young
